City of Ottawa
Ottawa 20/20 is a project designed to contribute to the development of a new Official Plan for the City of Ottawa. The City held the 'Ottawa 20/20 Smart Growth Summit' in June 2001 with presentations from renowned practitioners such as Sir Peter Hall and Andreas Duany.

Regional Municipality of York
The Regional Municipality of York has initiated a comprehensive planning and public consultation exercise in order to update its Regional Official Plan. The Planning for Tomorrow initiative is meant to incorporate principles of sustainability within the Region’s growth management plans. to chart its future through Vision 2026.

Regional Municipality of Niagara
Through its 'Smarter Niagara' initiative, the Regional Municipality of Niagara is viewing development and planning decisions through a smart growth lens.

Regional Municipality of Waterloo
Approved by the Regional Council in 2003, the Regional Growth Management Strategy is designed to ensure that growth occurs in a way that protects the unique features and liveability of the Region.

City of Calgary, Alberta
The City of Calgary’s Land Use Planning and Policy department has developed Transit Oriented Development Policy Guidelines that are meant to help guide more intensified, pedestrian oriented, development around transit stations.

Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia
The Halifax Regional Municipality is developing a plan to guide how and where growth should occur in the Region to 2028.
 
Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia
Recognized by the province of British Columbia as a Regional Growth Strategy the Livable Region Strategic Plan is aimed at protecting greenspace, encouraging complete communities, achieving a compact region and increasing transportation choice in the Greater Vancouver Regional District.

City of Winnipeg, Manitoba
The City of Winnipeg’s A Homegrown Economic Development Strategy for Winnipeg (June 2001)  discusses many of the development issues that the city would like to integrate into the Smart Growth framework, including sustainability, partnerships, indicators and implementation strategies. The Strategic Management Division within the CAO Secretariat provides leadership in strategic planning.
Plan Winnipeg 2020 Vision is City Council’s long-range policy plan that addresses the broad physical, social, economic, and environmental conditions in the city and provides the foundation for all civic activity.

Canada

Great Lakes Commission
The Great Lakes Commission is a bi-national agency that promotes the orderly, integrated and comprehensive development, use and conservation of the water and related natural resources of the Great Lakes basin and St. Lawrence River.

OnRAMP - Southwestern Ontario
The  Government of Ontario is responding to the varying needs of municipalities by piloting a regional web portal project – the Ontario Regional Area Municipal Portal (OnRAMP). These web pages are designed to enhance municipal client information and support services.

United States

City of Austin, Texas
Austin has been a leader in implementing Smart Growth policies. The site provides information on the city’s various initiatives to preserve and enhance livability by managing future growth.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been a leader in promoting Smart Growth in the US. The site provides information on EPA programs and resources available to help communities with environmental problem solving and smart growth planning.

Maryland Smart Growth Office
Maryland’s Smart Growth program has attracted considerable attention since its inception in 1997. The Smart Growth Office  coordinates the Priority Places efforts of Maryland state agencies; work with developers and local officials to help them bring smart growth projects to fruition; and educates and informs the public.

National Governors Association
The National Governor’s Association (NGA) examines and develops policy and addresses state and national issues. Its Center for Best Practices provides resources to create a balance between a clean environment, a strong economy, and a high quality of life. The NGA has released papers on Smart Growth and related topics.

Smart Communities Network - Department of Energy
This Web site contains information and resources on Smart Growth and Sustainable Communities-related issues, including backgrounders, references and suggested implementation tools.

State of New Jersey
New Jersey’s Smart Growth program employs established planning policies, as well as innovative incentives, to encourage compact, mixed-use development that makes the most efficient use of existing and planned infrastructure.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, New South Wales
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR) drives, coordinates and streamlines land use, transportation planning, infrastructure and natural resource management in New South Wales.

City of Curitiba
Curitiba is well known for its urban innovations and solutions. Urban Solutions contains some of its core ideas on sustainability, governance and planning.

Ireland

Greater Dublin Area
The Greater Dublin Area (GDA) has developed guidelines which call for increased emphasis on the concentration of future development into the metropolitan area and in designated development centres located on transportation corridors. The Strategic Planning Guidelines are the regional planning guidelines for the Dublin and Mid-East regions.

New Zealand

Auckland City
In response to significant growth pressures, the City of Auckland has developed a Growth Management Strategy to plan for and manage growth in a way that promotes a high quality of life, economic competitiveness, and environmental stewardship.

England Rural Development
The England Rural Development Programme consists of various initiatives to assist farmers and foresters in responding better to consumer requirements and in becoming more competitive, diverse, flexible and environmentally responsible.

Sustainable Development
Sustainable Development UK is an initiative which aims to encourage social progress, effective protection of the environment, prudent use of natural resources, stable economic growth and to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

Canadian Institute of Planners
The Canadian Institute of Planners is the national federation of planning professionals. The site contains a number of useful links and discussions on urban policy.

Conservation Council of Ontario – Green Ontario
The Conservation Council of Ontario is a provincial association of organizations and environmental leaders. The Smart Growth section on the site features various references and useful links.

Federation of Canadian Municipalities
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of the nation’s municipal governments. FCM has supported a number of smart growth and energy efficient municipal projects with its Green Municipal Fund.

Ontario Nature
Ontario Nature: Federation of Ontario Naturalists represents 25,000 members and 119 member groups across Ontario. It protects Ontario's nature through research, education and conservation action. The site also has an informative section on Urban Sprawl and Smart Growth.

Ontario Professional Planners Institute
The Ontario Professional Planners Institute's (OPPI) objectives include improving the quality of Ontario's environment and communities. The site outlines current research on Smart Growth and growth management.

Ontario Smart Growth Network
The Ontario Smart Growth Network promotes partnerships around smart growth and sustainable communities in Ontario. The goals of the organization are to stop urban sprawl, promote healthy communities and encourage public involvement in planning.

Smart Growth BC
Smart Growth BC is a non-profit organization that works on a broad range of issues with community groups and local governments to promote compact urban centres, efficient land use and sustainable transportation, to preserve agricultural land and green space, to ensure affordable housing and to reduce unplanned sprawl. The site has Smart Growth-related reports and articles available on its publicationspublications page.

Smart Growth Canada Network
The Smart Growth Canada Network is a national organization whose aim is to promote sustainable and smart growth principles.

Urban Development Institute - Ontario
The Urban Development Institute (UDI) works with private and public stakeholders across the GTA and Ontario and serves as a forum for knowledge, experience, and research on land-use planning, land development, housing and industrial/commercial enterprises.

United States

American Planning Association
The American Planning Association (APA) is a non-profit, professional and educational association. Growing Smart is a project to draft the next generation of model planning and zoning legislation. The site includes original research on Smart Growth and land-use planning.

Bank of America - Environment
Bank of America supports Smart Growth and promotes both economic development and environmental responsibility in the communities where it does business and publishes reports on related issues.

Demographia
The Demographia site provides comparative population information on the world’s urban centres.

Funders Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities
The Funders Network was established to inform and strengthen philanthropic funders' abilities to support and connect organizations working to advance social equity, create better economies, build livable communities, and protect and preserve natural resources.

Initiative for a Competitive Inner City
The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to spark new thinking about the business potential of inner cities.

Local Government Commission- The Center for Livable Communities
The Local Government Commission is a non-profit, non-partisan organization of elected officials, city and county staff, and other interested individuals. Its Center for Livable Communities helps local governments and community leaders in their land-use and transportation planning, and to adopting programs and policies that lead to more livable and resource-efficient land use patterns.

National Association of Home Builders - Smart Growth Resources
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) represents 200,000 members across the United States. It is committed to pursuing market-driven Smart Growth strategies. The site has several case studies and resources.

National Association of Industrial and Office Properties
The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) is an American association that represents the interests of developers and owners of industrial, office and related commercial real estate. It has conducted research into, and released position papers on Smart Growth. The site contains several case studies case studies on related topics.

National Town Builders Association
The National Town Builders Association (NTBA) is an American trade association that represents the interests of the town-building industry.

Sierra Club
The Sierra Club is an environmental advocacy group. Its site provides articles and resources on Smart Growth-related issues.

Smartgrowth.net
This site, a part of the ULI, provides  resources for communities pursuing a Smart Growth strategy, with a searchable archive of articles, abstracts from daily newspapers and free publications.

Smart Growth Network
The Smart Growth Network site includes sources of information and resources on Smart Growth, including backgrounders, news headlines and other materials.

Surface Transportation Policy Project
The Surface Transport Policy Project (STPP) is a coalition of more than 200 organizations working to ensure that transportation policies and investments conserve energy, protect environmental and aesthetic quality, strengthen the economy, promote social equity and make communities more livable.
