Toronto Waterfront Revitalization: One of the largest urban renewal projects in North America today

Imagine a new waterfront area for Toronto. Start with almost 2,000 acres of little-used urban space. Add:

  1. great parks
  2. vibrant communities, with more than 40,000 new homes and 40,000 new jobs
  3. a water’s edge reserved for public enjoyment
  4. theatre, music, arts and more.

This is Toronto’s waterfront revitalization…planned on a grand scale, with backing and financial commitment from the Province of Ontario, along with the city and federal governments.

What we’ve done so far

After years of planning, shovels are in the ground at Union Station, Mimico, East Bayfront and many others. We have already started to build the first new waterfront neighbourhood on the province’s West Don Lands. By 2009, we expect that substantial residential construction will be well underway for both affordable and market housing.

About Waterfront Toronto

The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation, now known as Waterfront Toronto, was created in 2001. This set the stage for planning to begin to renew this vital area. The renewal of Toronto’s waterfront provides the governments of Ontario, Canada and Toronto with a great opportunity to help keep Toronto as one of the best places in the world to live, work and visit.

Our vision is to create a waterfront that

  1. is easy for people to access
  2. offers the best in community planning and design
  3. creates jobs and helps businesses grow
  4. builds more parks and public spaces
  5. leads in the construction of green buildings with low energy use
  6. sets high standards for development, both now and in the years to come.

At long last, Toronto, as a world class city will boast a waterfront that will rival the likes of London’s Canary Wharf and New York City’s Battery Park.
It has taken a lot of hard work to get to this point. Our achievements to date have included developing community consensus on the future of the waterfront, planning and putting the right tools in place, and forging a committed coalition of partners, including the federal government, the city and Waterfront Toronto.

Waterfront development is an integral part of strengthening Toronto and securing the future prosperity of Ontario.
