The Budget - Building Opportunity, Building Infrastructure


The 2006 Budget is called “Building Opportunity” and building infrastructure in the province is a crucial element in the Ontario government’s plans.

The plan includes:

  • the new $1.2 billion Move Ontario investment in transit, roads and bridges to help move people and goods faster, create jobs and build a stronger economy;
  • $2.4 billion in low-cost, long-term loans for municipalities through the Ontario Strategic Infrastructure Finance Authority;
  • $5.2 billion under ReNew Ontario to support crucial highway construction projects across Ontario;
  • $623 million to enhance border crossings in Windsor, Niagara and Sarnia (with the federal government and other partners); and,
  • issuing Requests for Proposals for 11 major hospital projects in 2006-07 worth $2 billion through Infrastructure Ontario.

West Don Lands – a “model” redevelopment begins on Toronto’s waterfront


Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan joined federal and municipal colleagues on March 27 to launch the work on one of the most important urban revitalization projects in Ontario – the West Don Lands. “Toronto’s West Don Lands is a waterfront precinct as big as London’s Canary Wharf or New York City’s Battery Park,” said Minister Caplan, “and I am confident that it will become one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in Toronto.” [For the full story, click here.]

A Win-Win Partnership for First Nations and the Ontario Government


The Ontario government and First Nations are creating a new partnership with the March 29 signing of an Agreement-In-Principle (AIP) on gaming revenue. The historic AIP signed by Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario First Nations Limited Partnership (OFNLP) provides for sharing of the economic benefits of gaming with over 130 First Nations. Hospital Momentum Builds in March

Momentum is building in the Ontario government’s five-year infrastructure investment in hospitals. The government has announced two new hospital projects, released five requests for qualification to build and finance health care facilities through Infrastructure Ontario, and provided new funding from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation for the Sault Area Hospital. These health care projects are an essential part of the McGuinty government's plan to reduce wait times and upgrade hospitals, medical facilities and equipment across the province. A New Accolade for York U.


York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts officially opened The Accolade Project on March 20 with dancing, music and a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan. A vibrant new centre for fine arts education, the Accolade Project building “is a marvel, a dream come true,” the Minister said in his remarks at the opening ceremony. “It is a very tangible symbol of this government’s commitment to learning.” [For the full story, click here.]

Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) Invests Over $235 Million


Just in time for construction season, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced investments of up to $235,672,022 in 208 projects in 88 communities through Intake Two of COMRIF. This will  provide municipalities with the support they need to renew essential infrastructure in their communities.The importance of infrastructure was emphasized in the recent Ontario budget, the third part of a four-year plan to strengthen Ontario’s economic advantage by strengthening our people. This part of the plan builds opportunity and equips our people for success by investing in roads, bridges and public transit – while staying on track to eliminate the deficit.
