HALIBURTON COUNTY—The Ontario government has selected the FCI Group to operate the Leslie M. Frost Centre.
The province has taken another step forward toward re-opening the Frost Centre by approving FCI Group as the preferred proponent," said Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal who made the announcement on behalf of Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. "I would like to thank the members of the Frost Centre Working Committee and the people of Haliburton for their strong community spirit and the ongoing role they've played in this initiative."
FCI Group, who provided the best-value bid, was selected from two qualified proponents. The government is discussing with the company the finalization of a long-term lease to operate the facility with an emphasis on environmental and outdoor education programs.
"This is the next chapter in the process to breathe new life into the Frost Centre, which supports the government's priorities of healthy living and wellness through recreation and outdoor activities," said Caplan. "Our government is keeping its promise to the community to re-open the facility with a viable new operator, while ensuring the facility's infrastructure is in good operating condition when the time comes."
Work is underway to see the centre operating by June 2007.
"I am pleased the ministry has indicated that the Frost Centre is on track to re-open early next summer," said Laurie Scott, MPP for Victoria-Haliburton-Brock, who was part of the community appeal to re-open the facility. "I'm confident this will ultimately help the local economy through renewed opportunities for tourism, education and recreation."
Public access to Lake St. Nora, a boat ramp and portage route for canoeists, as well as walking, hiking and ski trails will continue through a long-term licence with the Township of Algonquin Highlands to use a portion of the Frost Centre property as a service centre.
